Annoying Ways - Samantha Held

In Annoying Ways, the author, Kyle Stedman, uses many analogies to compare different styles of writing. The main comparison being made in the article is between incorrect writing habits and driving; Stedman shows how sloppy writing styles can be similar to a person driving too slow. He also uses smaller analogies within the article (armadillos, Spider-Man, being in the right movie, etc.) to show how different errors within an essay can leave the reader to be confused and to lose interest. As a whole, the article was enlightening; it states the proper way to quote (prepare for it, quote it, and analyze it) and how frequently a writer should quote in his/her paper. The examples provided serve as a way for the reader to see the right and the wrong way to quote something, and they are also enticing to the reader. The lighthearted tone and updated analogies make the reader want to continue to read the article. Also, the passage provided assurance for me. Stedman states that a writer should always read his/her works out loud to make sure that the sentences flow together. I use this technique a lot, so I feel better about my writing skills. I found the passage to include a lot of useful information which I will be able to apply to my writing in the future. Such information includes when, how, and where to quote in an essay.
